Belitung, aka. Belitong, has been attracting public interest when the movie of Laskar Pelangi was screening in 2008. The movie adopted the best-selling novel, with the same title, written by Andrea Hirata. He was born in Belitung. His novel told a story of his unforgetable childhood in wonderful Belitung.
Anyway, the movie successfully visualised the beauty of Belitung Island. Gigantic rocks at white-sandy beaches with turquoise water. The coffee culture of local people. Moreover, replica of the elementary school, as told in the novel, becomes a must-visit destination for Indonesian visitors. Belitung has a similar history as Bangka. These two islands decided to separate from South Sumatra in November 2000 and established a new province: Bangka Belitung Archipelago. Belitung also recorded a long history of tin mining. Nowadays, some ex-mining sites were reconstructed as a tourism destination. New starred hotels has also been flourishing since 2015 to accommodate growing number of visitors to Belitung.
